Places to visit

  • Piroa falls

    This is a popular attraction situated on Gorge Road (metal road for the last few kilometers) with a pleasant walk developed by Rotary and DOC to the falls through the bush. The falls are spectacular and there is a good picnic spot. It is suitable for swimming and is excellent entertainment for the

    kids in the summer months.

  • Nikau grove

    This is situated on Whaka Street beside St David’s Presbyterian Church. It is very pretty and is one of the few naturally occurring stands of Nikau palm trees in New Zealand

  • Community walkway

    Maungaturoto has its own Community Walkway which features open farmland and small bush sections. The walkway entrances are located at the Country Club and near the car park at Otamatea High School. All residents are welcome to use this walkway however the walkway is closed during lambing season (which is about a month)

  • The Kauri Museum

    09 431 7417 Open 9.00am to 5.00pm daily (closed Christmas Day) The nearest museum is the Kauri Museum in Matakohe. This Museum is located on 5 Church Rd, Matakohe. The Kauri Museum is one of New Zealand’s most amazing themed museums.

  • Maungaturoto play grounds

    The playground and park are situated in Hurndall Street in the centre of town. The children’s playground is well equipped, and the park is an appealing place for picnics and games. There are public toilets nearby. there is a second playground on View rd with a bike track, perfect for the littlies. There is also a skate park situated on Bickerstaffe rd.

  • Whakapriau beach and wharf

    Whakapirau is a little beach settlement on the Kaipara Harbour, only 15kms from Maungaturoto; the road is sealed all the way there. It is suitable for swimming and for all types of water sports. There are no shops at Whakapirau but there is a church and a tennis court.

    Situated about a kilometre down Bickerstaffe Rd on the left, the club is home to several sports clubs and Otamatea Repertory theatre , it is also a function centre which has a bar and restaurant, check out their Facebook page for details

  • Otamatea Marae

    Situated on Tanoa Road, off Bickerstaffe Road, on the shores of the Otamatea River, Batley. It is a Tupuna Marae of the Ngati Whatua Iwi, Hapu Te Uri O Hau. The Marae is open to everyone and can cater for hundreds of people. The Marae is used for hui and tangi and there are often wananga for crafts such as taniko and whariki

  • Otamatea Repertory Theatre

    Otamatea Repertory Theatre is a community-based theatre company based in Maungaturoto. Our theatre provides an artistic outlet, for those young and old, from Mangawhai to Dargaville and from Wellsford to Whangarei. We produce a variety of shows - homegrown Pantomimes, classic musicals, 'loud and proud' variety performances, and comedies. Come and join us!

  • Maungaturoto Bowling Club

    Situated at the Country Club on Bickerstaffe Road. Has 2 tigerturf greens played on all year round. Informal roll-ups on Tuesday mornings 9.15 – 12.00 and twilight bowls held over the summer months. New members are welcome.

  • Maungaturoto Motorcross

    Located on Bickerstaffe Road, Maungaturoto, across the road from the Country Club. Club days are held on the first Sunday of every month from 10:00am. The club is licensed through Motorcycle New Zealand and has approximately 50 members. New members are always welcome

  • Maungaturoto Squash Club

    Situated at the Country Club on Bickerstaffe Road, Maungaturoto. The squash club has two courts. Club night is held every Thursday during the season. Junior programmes are available.

  • Otamatea Hawks Rugby

    Senior Men, Women and IMB rugby club located in the Kaipara. Based in both Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto

  • Kaipara Hunt

    Hunts from February through to June. Several horse treks and beach rides can be organised.

  • Paparoa Golf club

    There is a 9 hole Golf course on Golden Stairs Road

  • Maungaturoto Garden Club

    This club meets monthly on the third Thursday of every month at 1:00pm usually in people’s homes, but in June, July and August it meets in the supper room at the Maungaturoto Community Centennial Hall. New members are always welcome

  • Line dancing

    Is held at the Paparoa Hall on Thursday mornings at 9.30am and “Exercise to Music” is also in the

    Paparoa Hall Tuesdays at 10.30am
